Budget countertop RO review

Express Water ROC001 Review

A five-stage countertop RO with UV purification, hot/room/ambient dispensing, and a price that undercuts almost every competitor. It is not certified to the same standards as the AquaTru, and owner reports on leaks are mixed — but at roughly $150, it is the cheapest way to try countertop RO.

What the ROC001 actually is

The ROC001 is a five-stage countertop reverse-osmosis system with a UV purification stage and three dispensing temperatures: hot, room, and ambient. It holds 256 ounces in its tank and requires no installation — fill it, plug it in, and dispense.

Express Water claims up to 99.99% impurity reduction and publishes a TDS-reduction figure. One owner reported reducing 575 ppm tap water to 9 ppm after RO treatment, and multiple reviewers note the water tastes clean and comparable to bottled or ZeroWater. What is not clear from the listing is a live third-party certification listing comparable to IAPMO or WQA. Treat the “99.99%” claim as a manufacturer claim rather than a certified one until you verify a listing in the WQA or IAPMO directories.

What we liked

The price is the story. At around $150, it costs a third of the AquaTru and a fraction of most countertop RO systems. If you want to test whether countertop RO fits your routine without committing $500, this is the cheapest entry point.

Owner reports on water quality are strong. Multiple reviewers measured TDS dropping from the 500–700 ppm range to under 30 ppm, and the taste feedback is consistently positive. One reviewer tested for bacteria, pH, and TDS and reported it passed all three.

Three temperatures and a 256-ounce tank. The capacity is larger than the Waterdrop A1’s 204 ounces, and the hot-water function covers tea, coffee, and cooking without a kettle.

What we did not like

Leak reports are the biggest red flag. Of the reviewers who mention leakage, 32 out of 37 report a negative experience. Some leaks are at connections and fixable by tightening a cap; others are from the filter housing itself. One reviewer had the unit stop working after three months.

Certification is not clearly published. The listing does not name a certifying body or standard number the way AquaTru and Waterdrop do. If third-party certification is a must for you, this is not the system to choose without verification.

Flow is slow and the tank is manual-fill. One owner measured a half-gallon in 13 minutes and a gallon in 26 minutes. You will wait, and you will refill by hand. The 256-ounce tank helps, but it is not a plumbed system.

The ROC001 is the budget experiment. The AquaTru Classic is the certified workhorse. If you can stretch the budget and certification matters, the AquaTru is the safer long-term purchase. If you want to try countertop RO at the lowest possible entry price and can tolerate the leak risk, the ROC001 delivers clean-tasting water for the money.

Who should buy it

Buy the ROC001 if: you are on a tight budget, you want hot and cold RO water without installation, and you are comfortable checking connections and monitoring for leaks during the first weeks.

Skip it if: you need verifiable third-party certification, you want a hands-off system with a low leak risk, or you are not prepared to deal with potential warranty support delays.

Verdict

The cheapest way into countertop RO, and it works for many owners — but the leak reports and unclear certification mean it is not the system to choose if reliability and verifiable standards are your priority. A budget experiment, not a long-term guarantee.
