Budget under-sink RO review
APEC ROES-50 Review
The benchmark for budget under-sink RO. Five stages, WQA certification to NSF/ANSI 58 and 372, a four-gallon tank, and filter costs of roughly $45 to $90 per year. No smart features — just proven, inexpensive filtration.

The ROES-50 is a conventional five-stage under-sink reverse-osmosis system with a four-gallon pressure tank. It produces 50 gallons per day at 60 psi, uses standard 10-inch filter cartridges, and comes with a lead-free designer faucet. It has been on the market for years and has one of the longest track records of any budget RO system.
Its WQA certification covers NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS reduction and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free materials. It does not carry an NSF/ANSI 401 listing for emerging contaminants, so if certified PFAS removal is a hard requirement, this is not the system for that — the RO membrane reduces PFAS in practice, but the certification does not specifically cover them.

What we liked
The upfront price is the lowest in the top 10. At $199.95, it undercuts every other under-sink system in this guide. If you want certified RO on a tight budget, this is the entry point.
Running costs are low and predictable. Standard 10-inch filters mean you are not locked into proprietary cartridges. Annual filter cost of $45 to $90 is the lowest in this list.
WQA certification is real and verifiable. NSF/ANSI 58 covers TDS reduction, and 372 covers lead-free materials. It is not the broadest certification, but it is a legitimate third-party listing.
What we did not like
No smart features at all. No filter-life indicator, no TDS display, no app. You track filter changes with a calendar or a sticker.
The tank takes up cabinet space. Four gallons of pressure tank is not huge, but it is more than a tankless system like the Waterdrop G3P800.
No NSF/ANSI 401 listing. If certified removal of pharmaceuticals or specific PFAS is your priority, the Aquasana SmartFlow carries the broader certification.
APEC ROES-50 vs Aquasana SmartFlow
| APEC ROES-50 | Aquasana SmartFlow | |
|---|---|---|
| Certification | NSF/ANSI 58 & 372 | NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 401, CSA B483.1 |
| Contaminants | TDS, lead-free materials | 90 named, including PFAS, fluoride, lead |
| Remineralization | No | Yes |
| Upfront price | ~$200 | ~$225–$240 |
| Annual filter cost | ~$45–$90 | Higher, proprietary filters |
The APEC is the value play. The Aquasana SmartFlow is the certified step up — broader contaminant coverage, remineralization, and a higher upfront price. Choose based on whether certification breadth matters more than annual running cost.
Who should buy it
Buy the ROES-50 if: you want certified under-sink RO at the lowest possible upfront cost, you are comfortable with standard filter changes, and you do not need smart features.
Skip it if: you need NSF/ANSI 401 certification, you want filter-life tracking, or you prefer a tankless design.
Verdict
The default budget under-sink RO for good reason. Proven, certified, and cheap to run. It will not impress anyone with smart features, but it will reliably produce clean water for years.
